Overview
Kanishka is recruiting for an ambitious, impact-focused parliamentary intern whose central focus will be improving life for residents of the Vale of Glamorgan through our work in the Westminster office.
There is no requirement to have worked in politics or, indeed, to have worked before. A mindset of agency, effort, personal growth and an interest in delivering for the Vale in Westminster will be valued much more than the directness of political and wider work experience. You will spend most days directly with our small parliamentary team, learning together from the frontline of British politics.
Applicants who require particular flexibility of employment pattern are encouraged, as are those who feel suited to and excited by this role but may not fit the written specifications.
Team Ethos
- We are one team. Westminster team members need to be deeply committed to issues in the Vale, and colleagues based in the Vale need to have opportunities to explore issues in Westminster.
- We share a belief that working in public policy and politics is an excellent route towards delivering positive impact in the Vale and across Britain.
- We are a community. We are a small team, but we actively invest in building a network around us who can engage and contribute as needed.
Candidate Attributes
- Intellectual firepower: if you are excited by public policy, and bring sharpness and originality of thought to it, you will thrive in this role.
- Grit to get things done: a willingness to approach all tasks with equal enthusiasm and commitment is essential.
- Proactivity: you should take the initiative to figure out the best way to achieve our shared goals, and then deliver. This includes proactive idea generation and raising productive disagreements with others.
- Political judgement: you will be working in politics - you will need discretion to guard and build the team’s reputation and trust at all times.
- Operational excellence: you will be responsible for getting details right, and inevitably dealing with logistical complications, with an unrelenting focus on delivering outcomes.
- Collaborative instinct: you enjoy working collaboratively and are keen to build relationships across Westminster.
Core Responsibilities
Parliamentary Business
- Policy casework: Prepare high-quality, timely written correspondence in response to policy enquiries from constituents, stakeholders, and campaign groups on a range of topics.
- Support Vale representation in Parliament: Seek out and deliver on opportunities for Vale residents to engage in parliamentary business e.g. through tours for community groups.
- Support the Ministerial team: Provide operational and strategic support to Kanishka in his capacity as Minister for AI. This may include coordinating with ministerial colleagues and staff, assisting with the delivery of AI-related parliamentary business, and preparing public communications about Kanishka’s ministerial work.
- Projects: Over time, you will have the opportunity to propose and lead strategic projects that align with the office’s values and priorities. These projects may vary in nature, but will all require initiative, rigour, and a focus on measurable outcomes.
Communications
- Media engagement: Assist in managing relationships with local media. You will support the drafting and pitching of press releases and opinion pieces, manage reactive lines, and help maintain a consistent and professional media profile.
- Basic video production: Assist, where necessary, in the preparation of short video clips for use across digital platforms, including parliamentary clips and local visit footage.
- Innovation: As the media landscape shifts, so should our communications. You will be encouraged to stay abreast of such developments, and spot opportunities for impact.
